Senior Data Engineer

Role Overview

Time Out is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join our Tech team. We are looking for someone with previous experience designing, architecting and developing tools, scripts and pipelines for serving and ingesting data at scale. One that will be able to fix bugs fast and solve hard problems well. You must have experience designing, developing and deploying data services and API's; and demonstrated ability to work independently and be a self-starter.


  • Develop and maintain our data lake data warehouses and high-performance production databases.
  • Define technical requirements from stakeholder briefs in order to deliver data solutions.

  • Optimise highly available data pipelines that facilitate deeper analysis and reporting by the Data Team and stakeholders.

  • Define best-practices for data storage, access and security throughout the company and build or introduce tools to enforce these practices.

  • Develop and maintain data systems and processes for business stakeholders.

  • Define a culture of data collection, integrity, and insight focused effort.

  • Work in a small squad of engineers to own and deliver projects and be responsible for your systems.

  • Spread domain knowledge across the team.

  • Solve data problems across the organisation.

  • Write complex SQL queries.

  • Design and develop ETL pipelines using Python.

Skills and Experience

  • BS/BA in Computer Science, Math or other analytical field.

  • Python and SQL experience is a must.

  • Experience designing and influencing decisions around data architecture.

  • Experience working with cloud infrastructure services and databases is required.

  • Experience and understanding of using workflow management tools such as Airflow, Luigi, Azkaban, Pinball, etc.

  • Comfortable using a BI tool, preferably Looker.

  • Comfortable working in a Linux/Unix based environment.

  • Previous experience in mentoring teammates on new ways to deepen their technical craft is an advantage.
