Role Overview

The Commercial Designer will be responsible for assisting the Global Creative Director with the visual design and direction for commercial collateral for Time Out. The position will involve working closely with the Creative Solutions team and Branded Content Editor; producing commercial and client-facing collateral (digital & print) that is dynamic, eye-catching, and true to both our brand and audience. The Commercial Designer will play an integral part in bringing in new business; working from start-to-finish on projects, from designing dynamic decks and creating mockups to executing won pitches. Commercial projects will be a range of advertorials, booklets and guides, digital banner ads, mockups and decks for all channels (print, digital, social, and video). They will be supervised by the Director of Creative Solutions and will regularly collaborate with key members of various departments, including Content, Creative Solutions, and Events. The Commercial Designer will also work closely with the design team to ensure that all collateral produced is on-brand, and an extension of the other design collateral produced for the company (the magazine, video, marketing, etc.).


Key Responsibilities

  • Generate lively, inspired visual solutions for digital and print design within Time Out brand guidelines.
  • Assist the Global Creative Director (GCD) with designing a variety of commercial collateral for the Creative solutions team (pitch decks, mockups, booklets, digital banner ads, event collateral, and more), and improving our conversion rate with all client-facing collateral.
  • Embrace Time Out’s digital-first, mobile-first philosophy. A strong background in digital design is required.
  • Assisting the HOD with design and production of print advertorials and supplements for Time Out London magazine, as well as any additional UK titles. This includes page layout, developing concepts for both features and covers where required, retouching images, proofing pages, illustration, and pre-press.
  • Working closely with other designers, photographers, picture editors, illustrators and writers; ensuring all work produced is up to the highest standards, on-brand, and consistent across our channels.
  • Meet aggressive deadlines and ensuring all work completed is within budget.
  • Work closely with the GCD, and other key company stakeholders, to ensure that all artwork produced is up to the highest standards, and is consistent with the company’s direction globally.


Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in design, with a focus on publishing, media, magazine, and digital.
  • Expert proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, AfterEffects, etc.), Powerpoint, Keynote, and Google Slide is required. Expertise in G Suite, K4, and working on Macs is a bonus. 
  • Advanced digital design skills, with experience in web design, dynamic ads, animation, responsive design, and social media.
  • Experience in print design (magazines in particular), designing advertorials and supplement guides; executing everything to the highest standards. Must be willing to negotiate, present ideas in meetings, and be flexible to adjust ideas based on feedback, and willing to take on criticism accordingly.
  • A thorough understanding of fundamental design principles, with a firm knowledge of photography, typography, illustration, and printing. 
  • Excellent time management skills, able to work under pressure to tight deadlines on multiple projects simultaneously
  • A firm understanding of the advertising industry, trends in the market, how it’s changing and how to be cutting-edge.
  • Knowledge of design history, trends, and a current understanding of how the industry is regularly changing.
  • A clear understanding of the financial and functional dynamics of a global media business.
  • Ability to work in and contribute to a fun and dynamic team-based environment.
  • Must be educated to degree level or equivalent industry qualification. 
  • Fluent in English is essential. Fluency in French, Spanish or Portuguese would be a bonus
