Software Engineer (Frontend)

Role Overview

We are seeking Software Engineers to join our world-class Technology organization. You will be focusing largely on PHP and client side Javascript. Those inclined toward full-stack development are welcome and encouraged to explore the other parts of our technology stack. You will be responsible for the development and quality of our products. You will develop key features of the website, mobile apps and connected applications for consumers, internal users, and business partners.

Time Out is striving to build a culture where any engineer is comfortable diving into any of our repositories to fix, review, and implement new code.  But we also recognize that individuals enjoy and have aptitude for working on different parts of the stack.  If every one of your browsers is open examining javascript and DOM structures, if you have the skills for identifying and obliterating race conditions in javascript library initialization, and if ReactJS was an exciting development in your world, then this is the role for you.  Bonus points if you can bend CSS to your will via understanding rather than trial and error.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop software in small squads with motivated business partners and huge goals
  • Think like an entrepreneur and own your work, be responsible for your code
  • Almost certainly spending most of your days in Javascript (and its frameworks) and PHP (Symfony)
  • Our stack is deep; you may be expected to set up Linux instances, configure databases, develop schemas, pull data from APIs, and whatever else it takes to deliver products.
  • Help make architectural decisions about new platforms and frameworks, have a voice in the future of a growing business
  • Help create a culture of problem-solvers, eager to take on new challenges


Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years software development experience, BS/BA in Computer Science/Math a plus.
  • Proficiency in writing software and the fundamentals of creating/modifying a web site
  • Experience developing web pages with HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP
  • Able to use API’s to receive content for web or mobile applications
  • Comfortable in Linux, able to take a plain machine and deploy a custom web site
  • Experience working with databases using SQL is a plus
  • Experience using modern source control systems
  • Understands each potential breakpoint when scaling for the web
  • Able to communicate clearly verbally and in written documentation
  • Has opinions on coding practices and technical design rigor
